pretty + cheap

practical never makes perfect

Last fall, it was a white wool jacket.  This time around, it was a light beige tote bag.  Whether it’s clothing, accessories, or shoes, I gravitate towards most impractical, dirt-loving duds.  Rather than resist, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s nearly impossible to say no when my item-to-be is selling for less than 50 of its original price.

Case in point: this buttery leather Coach bag.  Regularly $379, I left the Woodburn outlets only $144 in the red. Practical?  Hardly. But it reminds me why I started bargain hunting in the first place. Clearance sales allow me to splurge on fun, impractical goodies. Items that I may have shied away from at first glance, but that have come to define my personal sense of style.

XXL bags

Call me Mary Poppins, but I love big bags. Extra-extra-extra-extra large bags. This weekender tote from Ellington Leather is super sized at H 28″ / W 23″ / D 8″, but it’s on sale for $39.50. Plus, the straps unsnap in front so you can slip in your yoga mat. Talk about value for your square inch.

love at first sight

I was at Old Navy on Friday afternoon, doing some last minute shopping for something dirt cheap and green, when this bright floral scarf caught my eye. With all the floral dresses I’ve been eying lately, I simply had to have it. Thank goodness I was at Old Navy and not at Nordstrom because the scarf was only 12 dollars. I’m super excited about it because now I can look springy without freezing my ass off.

There are two things I can’t get enough of for spring: gladiator sandals and chunky necklaces. Lucky for me, Anthropologie.com has pages of beautiful necklaces, and surprisingly, many of them are 50 dollars or less. These are some of my faves.

sheer genius

Two things I hate: panty hose and cellulite. One thing I love: Hanes Solutions Anti-Cellulite nylons. Who knows if they really beat the bumpy stuff, but at less than 10 dollars a pair (from mass retailers like Target, Walmart, etc.) its cheaper than splurging on expensive cellulite creams, and as a bonus they add a little bit of color to my haven’t-seen-the-sun-in-months legs.

great lengths

I keep forgetting to blog about these elbow-length cashmere gloves I found at Nordstrom Rack. Only 17 dollars on clearance! The extra length is great for when I stupidly decide to wear short sleeves in the dead of winter.

bubble gum pink mokeskine volant notebooks

I stumbled across these vibrant pink Moleskine notebooks at Barnes & Noble yesterday– what a great idea! They’re made out of the same sturdy material as other Moleskine notebooks, but they’re unbelievably girly. Love, love, love! At 12 dollars for two 5”x8” notebooks, I might be able to rationalize this purchase to help keep me organized in 2009.
